1 〔その場所で〕 at…; in…; on…; 〔その中で〕 in 《Paragraph 1》.

●平時において at times [in time] of peace; in peacetime

・国連の名において in the name of [under the auspices of] the United Nations.

●1964 年, 第 18 回オリンピック大会が東京において開催された. In 1964, the 18th Olympics took place in Tokyo.

・その日, 大統領の歓迎晩餐会が宮中において行われた. On that day a banquet was held in the Imperial Court to welcome the president.

・少子化による学校の統廃合が都会において進んでいる. In (the) cities, with a falling child population, more and more schools are being closed or amalgamated.

・私たちの基本的人権は憲法において保障されている. Our fundamental human rights are guaranteed in the Constitution.

・この大会において優勝したチームには賞金 50 万円が与えられる. In [At] this tournament the winning team will be awarded a prize of \500,000.

2 〔その機関･役職で〕 at…; in…; under…; under the authority of…; in the name of…; 〔…の側で〕 on sb's part; on the part of…; as for sb.

●その施設への立ち入りを法務大臣において許可する. Permission is hereby granted by [under the authority of, in the name of] the Minister of Justice for entry to the premises.

・ゴミの分別の方法は各自治体において定める. Methods for separation of garbage will be established within each local government authority [at the local government level].

・当方においては異存はございません. As for me, I [I personally] have no objections. | There are no objections on my part.

・〔抽選などで〕 品物の色につきましては, 当方において決めさせていただきます. We will decide the color (of the item). | The choice of color is made at our end.

3 〔その時･場合に〕 at the time of…; on the occasion of…; in 《the past [future]》; at 《present》.

●近い将来において in the near future; in the immediate future

・過去において in the past.

●平安時代においては通い婚が普通だった. In [During] the Heian period it was common for wife and husband to live separately.

・その時点においては, 警察はまだ彼が容疑者だと思っていなかった. At that time [stage], the police did not yet consider him a suspect.

・漂流を始めて 1 週間, ここにおいて彼は初めて死を考えた. Having been adrift for a week, he now began for the first time to think he might die. | It was now, when he had been adrift for a week, that he first began to see death as a possibility.

4 〔その点･事柄に関して〕 in…; as for…; as to…; as far as…is concerned.

●彼女は経歴において問題がある. There is a problem as regards her work experience.

・文体においては申し分ないが, 少々長すぎる. The style is perfect [It is perfect as to style], but it is a little long.

・使いやすさにおいてはこれが一番だ. When it comes to [In terms of] ease of use, this is the best.

・機能性においても経済性においても, 和服より洋服のほうが勝っている. In (terms of) both function and economy, western clothes are superior to traditional Japanese clothes.

・この点において, 二人の証言は食い違っている. On this point the evidence of the two conflicts. | The two of them give conflicting evidence in regard to this question.

・君は学校生活において何か不満なことでもあるのか. Is there something in [connected with] your school life which is making you unhappy? | Are you unhappy about something which has happened at school?

・航空機においては, 乗り心地などより, 安全性が最も要求される. As far as aircraft are concerned [When it comes to aircraft, With aircraft], the paramount requirement is less comfort than safety.
